Know your cholesterol numbers

High cholesterol is a leading risk factor for heart disease, America’s single leading cause of death. Because heart disease is so common, it is recommended that adults age 20 and over start having a cholesterol test every five years. Men over 45 and women over 55 should have this test more often.

Cholesterol, a waxy, fat-like substance produced by the liver produces certain hormones, insulates nerves, and makes cell membranes, vitamin D and bile acids that help digest fat. The body makes enough cholesterol to handle its own needs. Dietary cholesterol from animal products such as meats, poultry, fish and dairy products, can cause an excess of cholesterol in your blood, which can form plaque (a thick, hard deposit) on artery walls. Affected arteries become thicker, harder and less flexible; this is known as arteriosclerosis. Built-up plaque restricts blood flow to the heart, which can cause chest pain (angina). If the plaque blocks the blood flow completely, a heart attack can result.

Depression

You feel as though you've been walking around with a dark cloud over your head for weeks. Well-meaning friends say, 'just snap out of it,' but you can't seem to. If it's been an ongoing concern, you may be suffering from clinical depression. Depression is much more than 'the blues' or just feeling blah. It's more than just everyday ups and downs. Clinical depression is a serious health problem that affects the total person.

In any given one-year period, approximately 9.5 percent of the American adult population suffers from some type of depressive illness. Depression interferes with normal functioning and causes pain and suffering for the depressed individual, along with those who care about him. Unfortunately, many people with depression never seek help, even though a great majority of those with depression can be helped. A depressive disorder is an illness that affects the body, mood and thoughts. It is not a sign of personal weakness or something that can be willed or wished away. Without treatment, symptoms can last for weeks, months or years.

Walking may help reduce blood pressure

Download | Duration: 00:03:25

The heart pumps blood through the arteries to bring oxygen and nutrients to tissues throughout the body. Blood pressure is the force of the blood against the arterial walls. The higher the pressure, the harder your heart is working. Blood pressure is measured by two numbers and is written as a fraction, for example, 130/80. Systolic pressure, the number on the top of the fraction, represents the pressure while the heart is beating. The number on the bottom of the fraction is called diastolic pressure. It represents the pressure when the heart is resting between beats.

What you should know about Alzheimer's disease

Download | Duration: 00:05:23

AD is primarily a disease of aging. Approximately one in 10 people older than 65 years has the disease. The incidence rises to one in three over the age of 85. Although unusual, some individuals in their late 40s or early 50s are afflicted. These cases are particularly devastating since sufferers are in the prime of life. AD is very common in the nursing home population, with over half their residents having either AD or another form of dementia. However, approximately 70% of AD patients still live in the community, either alone, or with a spouse or another family member.
